What Is Spravato?

Spravato is an FDA-approved prescription nasal spray containing esketamine. For adults with treatment-resistant depression, it may be prescribed alone or with an oral antidepressant.

Spravato is taken at a certified healthcare setting under direct supervision. It is not a medication you take home.

What Is Interventional Psychiatry?

Interventional psychiatry is an area of mental health care that uses specialized treatments to influence brain activity and address psychiatric symptoms. These approaches may include magnetic stimulation, supervised medication treatments, and technology-assisted training that helps patients practice regulating brain activity.

Each treatment works differently and has its own eligibility requirements. Some may be considered when symptoms continue despite previous care, while others may complement an existing treatment plan.

Interventional care does not automatically replace medication management or therapy. Your provider will help you understand how a recommended treatment fits into your overall care.

Who May Be a Candidate?

Spravato may be considered for adults whose depression has not improved adequately after trying other antidepressant treatments.

An evaluation includes reviewing your diagnosis, previous medications, medical history, and current care. Your provider will discuss eligibility, safety considerations, and alternatives.

What to Expect During Treatment

1. Consultation and preparation

Your provider will evaluate whether Spravato is appropriate and explain the treatment plan. Before your first session, our team will review preparation instructions and transportation arrangements.

2. Supervised treatment

You will use the nasal spray yourself under direct healthcare supervision. Your care team will check your blood pressure and monitor you during the visit.

3. Observation

You must remain under observation for at least two hours after administration. Your team will assess when you are clinically ready to leave; some visits may require longer monitoring.

4. Going home

Arrange transportation home. Do not drive or operate machinery until the next day after a restful sleep.

Your Treatment Schedule

Treatment begins with a more frequent schedule and may become less frequent depending on your response. Your provider will explain the recommended plan, assess progress, and determine whether continued treatment is appropriate.

Important Safety Information

Spravato can cause sleepiness, dissociation—a feeling of disconnection from yourself or your surroundings—breathing problems, and increased blood pressure. It also carries risks of abuse and misuse. Antidepressants can increase suicidal thoughts and behaviors in some younger patients.

Discuss your full medical history, medications, pregnancy plans, and breastfeeding with your provider. Spravato is not approved for children. Treatment benefits and side effects vary.
